FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Deputies from Sebastian County are helping out with patrols at Fort Chaffee during the government shutdown.

The Sebastian County Sheriff's Office says it was notified Friday night that many of Fort Chaffee's fire and police personnel would be furloughed because of the shutdown. Spokesman Philip Pevehouse tells theSouthwest Times Record that Sebastian County already receives Fort Chaffee's 911 calls, but now deputies will be making regular patrols.

Fort Chaffee is located outside of Fort Smith and is used for training by the Arkansas National Guard.

A spokesman for the Arkansas National Guard says Fort Chaffee normally has 21 workers in its public safety office but is down to nine because of the shutdown.
