PINE BLUFF, Ark.(KTHV) - Pine Bluff Mayor Debe Hollingsworth wants to require landlords to apply for a business permit.

"Our overall goal is to understand where all the rental properties are and have contact information," said Mayor Hollingsworth.

The mayor said 40 percent of single-resident homes in the city are rental properties.

"The partnership with the landlord association is huge," said Mayor Hollingsworth.

Jean Paiton heads up the Jefferson County Landlords Association.

"Say the police went to my property10 times for the same people and the same disturbances, that doesn't mean that I know that," said Paiton.

Paiton said she supports the mayor, but is concerned about a $25 fee proposed to obtain the permits.

"For some of the landlords that's a lot of money to them," said Paiton.

"That's not etched in stone. I tossed out$25 only because with the meetings we've had with the landlords that was a number that they came up with," said Mayor Hollingsworth.

The mayor said she will now work with the landlords association on completing a proposal. She said it will then head to city council members who will draft an ordinance.
