MONTICELLO, Ark. (UAM) - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team had 52 points in the paint and 41 points off turnovers to lead to the team's fourth consecutive victory in an 88-48 win over Central Baptist College Saturday at home.
Senior Brandon Wilson led the Weevils with a career-high 26 points and added seven rebounds and four blocked shots to his final totals. The Rayville, La. native was 9-for-10 from the field and 8-for-13 at the free throw line. Seniors Dayton Mickens and Brandon Sims also reached double-digits in scoring with 13 and 11 points respectively.
Junior Kenric McCants aided the UAM offense with a career-high 10 assists, marking the program's first double-digit assist performance since Ricardo Hall's triple-double of 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 71-62 win over Centenary during the 2010-11 season.
The Weevils (6-2) started the game scoring the first eight points and built a 25-5 lead at the eight-minute media timeout of the opening period. Wilson had a pair of dunks in the final two minutes of the first half to help build a 34-point lead at halftime at 51-17.
The Mustangs (1-8) improved their shooting percentage nearly 20 percentage points in the second half, while UAM hovered around the 50 percent mark in the final 20 minutes. The Weevils outscored CBC 37-31 in the second half and led by as much as 43 points with 3:31 remaining in regulation.
UAM finished the game at 49 percent from the field (33-for-67), 26 percent on three-pointers (6-for-23) and 53 percent on foul shots (16-for-30). The Mustangs ended the game at 33 percent from the field (16-for-49), 29 percent on three-pointers (5-for-17) and 55 percent on foul shots (11-for-20).
UAM outrebounded CBC 46-37, held a 52-18 advantage in the paint and took advantage of CBC's 26 turnovers for a 41-0 final edge in the points off turnovers category.
In addition to the double-digit scoring trio of Wilson, Mickens and Sims, senior Lonnie Cottrell added nine points and five boards in 21 minutes off the bench.
Andrew Brown led the Mustangs with 12 points in just 16 minutes off the bench. Tony Brewster added 11 points.
The Weevils continue their current five-game home stand on Tuesday, December 17 against Philander Smith. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
