JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - It's an unthinkable crime: 7 puppies abandoned in a box at a busy intersection in Jonesboro.

The Jonesboro Police Department found the puppies at a stop sign inside a cardboard box taped shut with duct tape.

Authorities took the 3-to-4 week old puppies to the animal shelter for processing, but one later died.

Sergeant Larry Rogers said this sort of thing happens all the time.

He hopes people will start leaving any unwanted animals with Animal Control rather than dump them on the street.

"If someone does not find them and bring them to us it is a very long cruel death to these puppies. In this weather right here, they are going to freeze to death and it's a horrible death for them," said Rogers.

Police are currently trying to see if any fingerprints were left on the box to figure out who abandoned the puppies at the intersection.
