MAUMELLE, Ark. (KTHV) - Police received an emergency call late Tuesday afternoon after a fight broke out in one of the school's hallways.

Two students got into a fistfight, leaving one unconscious on the ground.

"One punched the other one, which caused him to possibly be knocked out," says Tammy Gulley, whose daughter witnessed the fight. "She said he was on the ground for some time."

Police arrested the assailant and charged him with second-degree battery.

Police Captain Jim Hansard said they don't know what caused the altercation, but are investigating whether or not it was gang-related.

"That is one of the things that we are investigating- if this is actually a gang-affiliated incident," says Hansard. "There is some indication of that and we are looking into it for sure."

The Pulaski County School District released a statement Thursday saying, "...the school administration and the district take student safety seriously. Although this is a student discipline issue, which legally limits what the district can comment upon, we can assure you that that not only did this incident result in one student being arrested, but the other individual was disciplined accordingly. "

The assailant has been given a court date for March 20th at 10 a.m.
