JONESBORO, Ark. (A-State) - Arkansas State University's Richard Chavez has been selected as this week's Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Indoor Track and Field Men's Field Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office this Wednesday.
Chavez, a senior, earned fourth place among 27 competitors in the shot put finals at the University of New Mexico's Don Kirby Elite Invitational held last Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M., by registering a distance of 61-11.31/18.88m.
A native of Clovis, N.M., Chavez presently is sixth nationally among the 2014 NCAA Division I Indoor Track National Qualifiers in the shot put event by virtue of his current conference-leading 65-09.75 throw at A-State's season-opening ASU Kickoff Klassic (Dec. 1).
The weekly conference honor represents Chavez's second this indoor season after earning league plaudits on Jan. 29 following his noteworthy performance at the A-State Invitational (Jan. 24) in Jonesboro, Ark. Chavez earned first-place honors with a personal-best effort of 65-06.25/19.98m in the shot put at the A-State Invite and finished fifth in the weight throw with a 62-07.25/19.08m toss.
The selection of Chavez marks the seventh time this indoor season in which an A-State track athlete has earned a weekly league award. Chavez along with senior Kashef Daniel (Feb. 5) have been recognized as SBC Male Field Athletes of the Week this indoor campaign.
Chavez and the nationally-ranked Red Wolves will be competing in the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship this weekend (Feb. 24-25) at the Birmingham (Ala.) CrossPlex.
