Mid-South Sales buys hightower oil company

Mid-South Sales of Jonesboro has purchased the fuel, lube and fuel services business of Hightower Oil Company of Plumerville, the companies announced this week. The deal gives Mid-South, ranked No. 53 on Arkansas Business' list of the state's largest private companies, its eighth location in Arkansas. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. "We are proud of the service we have provided our customers through Hightower Oil Company these many years and appreciate the relationships we have built during our time in this business," Kenny Shipp, Hightower's president, said in a news release. "However, the competitive environment in the fuel and lubricant business is evolving, and we feel this is the right choice for our business moving forward.

GM raising Corvette prices

If you've been waiting to buy a new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, that's going to cost you. The base price of the sports car just went up by $2,000, going from $51,000 to $53,000. General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) also increased prices for the Stingray convertible by $2,000. It now costs $58,000. In addition, the price of the Z51 performance option package went up by $1,200. It now costs $4,000. The Z51 package adds larger wheels, performance tires and special aerodynamic features, among other things.

2 million students missing out on college aid

Millions of college students are missing out on financial aid for college because they aren't even applying for it. About 2 million students could have qualified for the need-based Federal Pell Grant during the 2011-12 academic year, but they failed to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) required to receive it, according to new analysis of government data from Mark Kantrowitz, senior vice president at Edvisors Network and author of "Filing the FAFSA." Of that group, 1.3 million would have qualified for a full Pell Grant of $5,645 for the 2013-14 academic year.

Miracle machine turns water to wine

Wine connoisseurs will be happy to know a new gadget will allow them to turn water into wine — literally. It's called The Miracle Machine, and its creators claim with just a couple affordable ingredients and a few days, it can create wine just as good as any bottle found at the store. Users can select recipes and even track the wine's maturing process from an accompanying iPhone or Android smartphone app via Bluetooth.
