LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – Two officers were recommended for a Letter of Commendation after helping a mother and her son through a traumatic experience Monday morning.

According to police, officers responded to a burglary in progress at home on Meadowlark Lane in Little Rock. Two men reportedly kicked in the front door, damaging the frame and jamb. During the burglary, a 13-year-old was reportedly home sick and was able to scare the men away.

According to the police report, the boy heard a couple of knocks at the door, but did not answer it. Then, he heard the front door being kicked in, so he ran to the back of the house. At one point, one of the men saw him in the back, but ran away when he saw him.

After the burglary, the boy's mother returned home to retrieve him and head to a nearby relative's house. When they were traveling, police said their vehicle was struck by another, and the mother and son were taken to a hospital.

According to police, while she and her son were being treated, two officers responded to the house to secure and fix the front door. One of the officers spent his own money on the necessary hardware, and they were able to fix the door knob, jamb, and trim.

The letter from Sgt. J. Follett reads, "[The mother] and her 13 year old son experienced two traumatic events in a matter of an hour. [She] was very upset and concerned for her home and its contents following the burglary and vehicle accident. Officer Healy and Officer Ketzscher were able to ease her concerns by volunteering to personally secure her home and fix her door. The officers displayed outstanding citizenship and went beyond their duty to help the distressed citizen. I recommend that Officer Healy and Officer Ketzscher receive a Letter of Commendation for their actions."

The men involved in the burglary are not identified at this time. According to the police report, one man was wearing a red hoodie and a do-rag while the other was wearing a grey hoodie and blue jeans. They are said to have been in a Nissan Maxima.

If you have any information on this crime, you're asked to contact police.
