NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – North Little Rock Police officials say their city's recent top five ranking in Movoto.com's list of most dangerous small cities in America doesn't accurately represent their department's crime statistics.

"There's a lot of departments out there that don't report crimes like we do," said Sgt. Brian Dedrick of the rankings. Staff members at the real estate website compiled the list using 2012 data of violent crimes, murders, and property crimes per 100,000 residents. North Little Rock ranked 5th most dangerous among the 234 cities on the list. Each city's population was between 50,000 and 75,000 residents.

"When I think about dangerous cities I think about violent crime, not necessarily property crime," Dedrick added. North Little Rock was number 1 in terms of most property crimes per 100,000 residents, which proved to be a big factor in their 5th overall ranking.

Dedrick argues the reason North Little Rock had so many property crimes was because the department included nearly 1,000 shoplifting cases in their numbers. "A lot of agencies may not report that in their crime analysis but we do," he said. "That's about twenty percent of our total property crimes right there."
