LONOKE COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) – When most people call in stolen electronics to police they have no way of proving it ever belonged to them according to Lonoke County Sheriff John Staley.

"We can't catch the bad guys if we don't have evidence," Staley told THV11. "A lot of times we recover property such as tv's, gaming systems, ATV's. If you don't have the serial number to match it we can't give it back to you."

Staley says it's important to write down serial numbers when you buy new electronics and keep the numbers in a safe place. Most people with spoke with say it's something they don't do enough. "I do for a good number of them but not for all of them," said Chris Morrison. "I would do it with high value items. I think it's not a bad idea."

In addition to serial numbers on electronics, Sheriff Staley also recommends people take and store pictures of all jewelry in their home to be used as evidence as well.
