JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) – The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department released a statement early this morning announcing Criminal Investigator Randy Jackson's resignation. Jackson had been in involved in a nightclub shooting last Saturday night after allegedly shooting a man in the chest outside of a Pine Bluff business.
According to Major Lafayette Woods, Jackson turned in his resignation letter to the sheriff's department Friday and indicated personal reasons for quitting. Jackson is currently under investigation over an officer-involved shooting chest at Swann's Bar and Grill in Pine Bluff around 3:30 a.m. The man who was shot was rushed to the Jefferson Regional Medical Center for emergency surgery and remains in intensive care.
Not much information has been released about the shooting itself, leaving Pine Bluff residents asking a lot of questions.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department released a statement early this morning announcing Criminal Investigator Randy Jackson's resignation.
"We need to know the whole story," stated Lettie Rayfus, who has worked in the area for more than 30 years. "Was it illegal? Did he pull the gun?"
Whether shots were fired from Jackson's personal weapon or a police weapon is still unknown. Woods told THV11 News that although JCSO has made progress in the investigation, they still can't know the details until the investigation is complete.
"We haven't found out whether or not Investigator Jackson was on duty, but at this point in time we can't touch up on the aspect of it," Woods explained.
Last May, the sheriff's office banned off-duty deputies from going into nightclubs inside county lines, but Rayfus said she's witnessed officers work second jobs for extra cash.
"A lot of them do moonlighting, that type of thing where they work security," she said. "You know—where they get paid to keep the bad people on the outside."
Before his resignation, Jackson had been on paid administrative.
