CLINTON, Ark. (KTHV) - As a way to celebrate the people of Van Buren County's resilience, a group of Clinton residents organized a potluck at the local high school Saturday, and they were quite competitive about it.
With more than 500 residents sharing their favorite meals, the town tried to set a Guinness World Record for having the biggest Potluck Party. All of it started as a survivor fest to share information about what to do in a natural disaster with the public since Van Buren County has suffered 15 declared natural disasters in the last six years.
Organizer Jackie Sikes said the best way to get people together is by enjoying Southern food
"[Another] one of the reasons we did this was to celebrate all of our hospitals, our first responders, our emergency teams," added Sikes.
At the event, the group sold t-shirts and accepted donations to help revitalize Clinton's downtown area.
Gayla Bradley said her Mexican style chicken is a family favorite.
"I made three this morning. One for the potluck, one for my daughter in college, and then one for us to eat tonight," said Bradley. She brought out her best ingredients. "Cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, ten pounds of chicken, and a little garlic."
Almost 500 people turned out. In order to set a new record, they needed more than 1,200 people. For their first attempt, Sikes said it's a great start and might be trying again next year.
