SALINE COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) – Community leaders and history buffs came out Sunday as the county unveiled their official 150th anniversary marker from the war-between-the-states.
The Saline County Civil War Sesequicententennial Historical Marker depicts a famous artifact--the county's seal--which was lost for 133 years. Each county gets a marker through the Department of Arkansas Heritage.
"That seal was in use from when the county started around 1836 until it disappeared, so it was on records of all kinds," explained Jim Harris, Saline County Circuit Clerk. "The very earliest settlers had their land stamped with it."
The old seal was found in 1996 and is now displayed in the county clerk's office.
