LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - With this heat, many of you will be heading out to the rivers and lakes this weekend. Sarah Fortner was out at the Little Maumelle River on Friday, taking in one of Central Arkansas' coolest new outdoor activities.
"Paddle boarding is a relatively new sport to the area --we've been carrying paddleboards for 3 or 4 years now."
Jim Frank is owner of Ozark Outdoor Supply in Little Rock.
"It's a great cross train workout if you want another alternative to your usual workout routines, and it's something you can do in the water." said Frank.
It's a work out that you can handle, even in the summertime heat.
"In Arkansas it's growing slow but steady. There's some barriers I think at least in the central Arkansas area as far as places to go and do it," said Frank.
But the number of places to go is growing as well.
"We're here, we may paddle over into this back water to see some deer and wading birds, we'll have some pretty views, we may also paddle down to underneath our bridges -our pedestrian and bicycles bridges."
Kirsten Bartlow is with Arkansas Game and Fish.
"We are developing water trails all around the state, this is one of the newest ones-it's the Little Maumelle water trail," said Bartlow.
Being a rookie, it takes more balance than you think. The scenery was great from the trail.
The best advice before heading out, "it would be good for you to have a buddy with you, in case you were to fall or hit your head or anything like that. Be real aware this is a public boat launch, people are coming in here to fish and other things," said Bartlow.
Special thanks to Ozark Outdoor Supply for the boards and instruction today, and also, Arkansas Game and Fish for showing Sarah the ropes.
