LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Heart disease is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined and it's the number 1 killer of women. That's why all of us at THV 11 are committed to raising awareness on the issue. One way we can do that is by changing our grocery lists for the better.

Grocery shopping isn't always easy, especially when you're trying to cut calories unless you know where to look.

To keep your blood pumping - you need to keep your eyes peeled. Alexis Sims with the American Heart Association, tells you exactly what to look for. She said, "You can always look for the heart check mark and we found one here. That means you can grab it and go, you don't have to take the time to to look for other products because you know it has lower sodium, lower cholesterol."

When you're trying to stay on a heart healthy diet, you don't have to stick to the gluten-free or the organic aisle, you can shop the entire store for heart healthy items and thanks to the American Heart Association you can do it on a budget.

Sims said, "The oranges, the apples, even the kiwi, all of this produce is less than one dollar per serving. Vegetables that you find in your fresh section of your grocery store are also one dollar per serving or less."

Sims adds, "To be heart healthy isn't going to break the bank, you just have to be a smart shopper when you're in your grocery store."

But not every brand goes by the heart-check guidelines. Sims said, "If you see a Kroger brand, like this, they're not going to have the heart healthy check mark, but that doesn't mean that it won't fit into a heart healthy diet."

She said that's when you need to focus on the nutrition label. She said, "Make sure the amount of sodium fits in the American Heart Association's recommendations, just 1500 milligrams a day."

The best way to ensure a healthy meal of course is to cook it yourself.
