LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- The Arkansas Travelers are gearing up for their first home game Thursday. After a couple years of re-branding, the travelers are ready to debut their new look this season.
They're welcoming new uniforms and two new mascots.
"Well we're in Arkansas so camo obviously fits," said Travelers account executive Rusty Meeks. "It's got our A-Travs watermarked in the camo and our state emblem on the left sleeve."
Fans can see hunter green at every Sunday home game to honor the military. This makes the Travs the first professional sports team to have their own customized camo.
But that's not the only changes you'll see this season, "I'm excited with him on the front. I think it's a sharp looking cap and again, they'll be wearing these with the camo jerseys," said Meeks.
That's Otey the Possum on the new breath caps. He is one of two new mascots for the travelers this year. The other mascot is Ace the Horse. "Ace will be just like Shelly. He'll be the face of the travelers. Otey will just be another kid character as well so I'm looking forward to seeing Otey around."
Over the years the Arkansas Travelers have changed or redeveloped their brand. First they started with no mascot in 1901, second they had Shelly, and third they got Ace and Otey, who they plan on bringing all the way home. However, some fans are having a hard time getting used to the two new faces.
"The possum is a little too redneck," said one Travelers fan. "Ace is more victorious, rather than a possum," said another fan. "I like the horse because I'm a super hero kind of guy," said another Travs fan. And another fan said, "Otey makes me feel at home, but Ace is kind of intimidating."
Either way, it's a fresh start to the season and for the team. "I'm just really excited to see how everybody takes to it and if we can get a champion at the end of the year wearing this new stuff," said Meeks.
It seems Ace will slide right into the saddle with fans, but Otey the Possum will need to warm up the crowd a bit.
One Travelers fan summed thinks up with, "I think it'll be a fine season for the team, not so much for a certain mascot…"
In addition to the new uniforms, logos, and mascots, Dickey-Stephens Park has a brand new merchandise shop and a bar on the third base line.
