RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — James Sharp went 2-for-4 with five RBIs, Mike Kattula went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Patrick Castleberry went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs as the No. 17 Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (12-3, 4-0 GAC) baseball team picked up a 12-2 run-rule victory over the East Central Tigers (6-9, 1-4 GAC) on Friday afternoon at Tech Field.
The game started off with a scoreless first inning. With two outs in the bottom of the second, Sharp hit a three-run double to give the Wonder Boys a 3-0 lead over the Tigers. Castleberry hit a homer over the left field wall to add two more runs to the board and make it 5-0 after two.
In the bottom of the third, Kattula smashed a home run to left field to add another run for the Wonder Boys and increase their lead to 6-0. A scoreless fourth inning led to a productive fifth. In the top of the fifth, the Tigers managed to get their first two runs with help from back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning.
Up 5-2, Tech benefited from three singles and an error from the Tigers to post four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-2 lead. The Wonder Boys held the Tigers scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings while Sharp doubled down the left field line to secure two more runs and the 12-2 run-rule victory in the seventh.
The Wonder Boys had eight hits and five walks on the day. Ryan Taylor improved to 2-1 on the season after pitching the full seven innings and giving up just one earned run on six hits. He also struck out nine batters.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Tech Field.
