PINE BLUFF, Ark. (UAPB) - The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Baseball Team scored 16-plus runs for the second time in three games as the Golden Lions defeated Southern University, 16-7 here Sunday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Baseball, Softball and Little League Complex.
UAPB (12-22, 12-5) finished the contest with a game high 17 hits with Isias Alcantar going four-for-six from the plate, scoring three runs and driving in three runs for the Golden Lions. SU (6-18, 2-11 SWAC) recorded 15 hits in the contest with D.J. Wallace going four-for-five from the plate, scoring two runs and driving one to lead the Jaguars. Kyle Schwartz (3-4) picked up the win for the Golden Lions as he pitched six innings, allowing 13 hits, seven earned runs and striking out one in the 33 batters he faced, while Samuel Olson pitched three innings in relief, allowing two hits, and two walks in 13 batters he faced. J'Markus George (0-3) received the loss for the Jaguars as he pitched three and one-third innings, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in the 24 batters he faced, while Victor Ilarraza, pitched four and two-third innings in relief, allowing eight hits, three earned runs and striking one in the 26 batters he faced.
The Golden Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an Alcantar double to right field scoring Vladimir Gomez in the bottom of the first inning. SU tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the second inning Gavin Webster single scoring Jeremy Glore. UAPB broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third inning with a Kirby Campbell single to right center scoring Alcantar, followed by a Joshua Cassidy single scoring Andre Davis. Glore cut UAPB's lead to 4-2 with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Tyler Kirksey, who tripled in his at-bat in the top of the fourth inning. UAPB made the score 11-2 with as the Golden Lions scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wallace cut into the Golden Lions leads with a homer to left field, cutting UAPB's lead to 11-3. The Golden Lions added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on Rashawn Tillman single scoring Jose Hernandez, who tripled in his at-bat, giving UAPB a 12-3 lead. SU pushed across four runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut UAPB's lead to 12-8. The Golden Lion pushed across four more runs as they scored two runs in their half of the seventh and two runs in their half of the eighth for the 16-7 win.
