LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UALR) – UALR fell behind early and never recovered against Stephen F. Austin in a 3-1 loss at Gary Hogan Field.
Chad Bradford was the tough luck loser for the Trojans allowing three runs and working into the eighth inning.
The Lumberjacks got off to a 2-0 lead scoring a run in the first and another in the second against Bradford on five hits.
From there Bradford settled in and held to just two hits over the next five innings as he kept the Trojans within striking distance.
UALR dented the plate in the bottom of the fourth Tanner Rockwell singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Rockwell then scored when Joseph Paulino singled up the middle to make it 2-1.
The Trojans threatened in a handful innings but were unable to knot the score and in the top of the eighth inning Mackenzie Handel homered to right to give the Lumberjacks an insurance run. Bradford finished the game going a career-high 7.0 innings allowed three runs, all earned, on eight hits while striking out five.
Brent Mason relieved Bradford in the eighth with a runner on first and got out of the inning without any more harm being done thanks to two strikeouts and a caught stealing. Dyllon Brownmiller pitched the top of the ninth setting down SFA in order with two strikeouts.
Hayden Martin led the Trojans with two hits including a double. Paulino had a hit and a RBI while Rockwell had a hit and scored UALR's lone run. Ben Crumpton, Austin Pfeiffer and Justin Steelmon added singles to round out the Trojans' offensive output as they left eight runners on base.
UALR didn't commit an error in the game after committing 15 errors in the three-game series at ULM over the weekend.
The Trojans will be on the road on Wednesday with a game against Central Arkansas, first pitch at Bear Stadium will be at 6:00 p.m. UALR will be back at home for conference play on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. against Georgia State for a three-game series.
