LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UALR) – The Mavericks grabbed another early lead and this time the Trojans were unable to come back and took the 8-3 loss at Gary Hogan Field.
UALR (21-26, 7-17 SBC) trailed 8-0 entering the ninth as Zach Thompson kept the offense off balance and UTA's (24-25, 13-11 SBC) powerful offense slugged three home runs.
UALR entered the ninth inning with just four hits against Thompson. However, that changed as Drew Merten, Petr Sila and Sam Vogel posted three straight singles to load the bases before Ryan Scott drew a walk to plate a run. A sacrifice fly by Austin Pfeiffer and a single by Ben Crumpton plated two more runs, but the rally ended there and the Trojans fell 8-3.
Through the first three innings UALR's Cameron Allen matched Thompson pitch-for-pitch and held the offenses scoreless. But in the fourth the Mavericks were able to break the tie.
Ryan Bottger led off with a double justinside the right field line. Bottger came around to score on a single by John Michael Twitchell before Levi Scott hit a three-run homer to give UTA a 4-0 lead.
The Mavericks added to their lead in the sixth with a solo home run by Twitchell and a two-run shot by Darien McLemore to make it 7-0. Allen finished his outing allow seven runs—six earned—on eight hits while striking out four in six innings. The loss was Allen's first at home this season having entered the game with a 4-0 record at Gary Hogan Field.
UTA added an eighth run in the eighth inning when McLemore scored on an RBI groundout by Bottger.
Bryson Thionnet had a good day at the plate with a double and a single. Sila and Crumpton each had multiple hits with two singles. Pfeiffer picked up an RBI, but was unable to extend his hitting streak, which ended at 14 games.
The Trojans will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Oral Roberts at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock at 6:30 p.m.
