SACRAMENTO, Calif. (A-State) – Two athletes affiliated with Arkansas State University track and field, Sharika Nelvis and Richard Chavez, will be competing in the 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field (USATF) Championships this week (June 25-29) in Sacramento, Calif.
The 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are being hosted by the Sacramento Sports Commission, will be held at Sacramento State University's Hornet Stadium. The 2014 USATF Outdoor Championships will feature the nation's best athletes while serving as the final meet of the 2014 Outdoor USATF Championship Series.
Nelvis, a 2014 semifinalist for the Bowerman Trophy as the nation's top female collegiate track and field athlete, will compete in the 100-meter hurdles with first-round competition set for this Friday (June 27) at 7:25 p.m. (CT). The semifinals for the 100-meter hurdles takes place Saturday (June 28) at 1 p.m. (CT) with the finals to be the day's last scheduled event, starting at 4:52 p.m. (CT).
Nelvis capped off her A-State career by becoming the national 100-meter hurdles champion at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships (June 11-14) in Eugene, Ore. The three-time (2012-14) U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor and Outdoor All-America selection claimed national indoor champion honors in the 60-meter hurdles earlier this year. Nelvis, a Memphis, Tenn., native, was recently chosen as the winner of the 2014 Honda Sports Award for women's track and field and was honored as the 2013-14 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Female Athlete of the Year.
A year ago, Nelvis turned in a 26th-place 13.79 time in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Chavez is slated to compete in the shot put's qualifying round this Wednesday (June 25) at 1:30 p.m. (CT). The event's trials and finals are scheduled for 8:15 p.m. (CT). The shot put will be conducted at the California State Capitol.
Chavez earned 2014 USTFCCA All-America First-Team recognition in the indoor season with a sixth-place performance in the shot put at the NCAA-I Indoor Track & Field Championships (March 14-15) in Albuquerque, N.M. Chavez, who hails from Clovis, N.M., was crowned the 2014 SBC Indoor Shot Put Champion.
