DURANT, Okla. (SAU) – Southern Arkansas freshman utility player Shelby Miller went 3-for-3 with a pair of homeruns and five RBIs as she helped power the SAU softball team to a 9-6 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
The win in that game gave the Lady Muleriders (20-16, 15-11 GAC) a split in the day's doubleheader and a split in the series overall. In the opener on Saturday, the Lady Muleriders' potentially potent lineup was kept in check by Southeastern starter Mindy McElroy as she pitched a complete-game shutout.
In the second game of the day however, Miller began her outstanding performance at the plate in the top of the first as she drew a walk. An inning later, Miller, who also started the game in the circle, delivered one of the big hits in the game on either side as she blasted a two-out grand slam to give the Lady Muleriders a 6-2 lead.
In the next half inning, however, Miller would get touched up for a game-tying three-run shot by the Savage Storm's (23-10, 16-6 GAC) Laramie Beal, knotting the game at six-all.
The game would remain tied at six-all until the top of the fourth inning when Miller launched a two-out solo homerun out to left field. Three innings later, Miller picked up her third hit of the game as she led off the top of the seventh with a single down the left field line. Two batter later, Miller would come around to score as Audrey Farfan gave the Lady Muleriders two more runs of insurance as she hit a two-run double to left-centerfield.
Miranda Cuff, who came on in relief of Miller in the bottom of the third inning, would make that three-run cushion stand as she completed a terrific relief effort for her sixth win of the season. All told, Cuff would work the final five innings of the game in fairly dominant fashion as she allowed no runs, walked none and allowed just two hits.
The Lady Muleriders will now return home for an eight-game home-stand beginning with a four-game series with East Central. That series is slated to begin on Friday, April, 4 at 1 p.m. at Lady Mulerider Field.
