FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) – Former University of Arkansas left-handed pitcher Michael Gunn has signed a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox.
Gunn was selected by the Red Sox in the 16th round with the 494th overall pick and was one of six Razorbacks taken in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He joins former teammates Chris Oliver (Philadelphia), Brian Anderson (Miami) and Eric Fisher (Miami) to sign professional deals. Gunn has been assigned to Boston's Class A Short Season Lowell Spinners.
A native of Wilson, Ark., Gunn posted the lowest earned run average for the Razorbacks last season at 0.74, allowing just three earned runs in 36.2 innings of relief work. He made a team-high 28 appearances from the bullpen and posted a 4-2 record.
He recorded 35 strikeouts and added a team-best seven saves on the year. Gunn allowed 21 hits on the season and opponents hit .165 against the left hander.
Gunn shined in his final six appearances of the year, working 10.0 innings without giving up a run, while striking out seven and allowing just one extra base hit. He pitched 4.1 innings in the NCAA Regional and allowed just two hits, while striking out four.
