FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) – After getting an off-day to spend time at the Razorback Football Fan Day, the University of Arkansas football team returned to the practice field to start its final week of fall camp as they partook in the first of two practices on Monday.
In their first practice since Saturday's scrimmage, the Razorbacks continued to fine tune on both sides of the ball in the two-minute drill with simulated crowd noise, and the defensive line shined in the 11-on-11 drill as they were continually getting pressure on the quarterback.
Venue: Outdoor Practice Fields
Format: Full Pads
Highlights: The defensive side of the ball put on a spectacular display in the 11-on-11 drill, as they continually pressured the quarterbacks, forcing them to make quick decisions in the pocket … The secondary also had a solid 11-on-11 drill, as Jared Collins had a pair of pass breakups and Rohan Gaines picked off a pass … Starting quarterback Brandon Allen had a strong showing in the two-minute drill, as the junior completed 6-of-9 passes and rushed for a 10-yard score. Allen hooked with tight end Hunter Henry on a 20-yard completion to get into the red zone, and two plays later Allen converted on a third-and-goal situation with a 10-yard scramble for the touchdown … The second team offense also had a successful two-minute drill, as Rafe Peavey connected with Kendrick Edwards for a 35-yard touchdown with three seconds remaining on the clock.
Quote of the Day: "We made progress. And I thought the younger guys like JoJo Robinson and Kendrick Edwards made some progress and that led that into the scrimmage, which I thought was really good." - Michael Smith (@CoachMichaelSmi) on Saturday's scrimmage.
Jim Chaney on Austin Allen (@AustinAllen8) being named the backup quarterback: "Austin has had a solid camp. Saturday he got to go against the one defense and that usually changes things statistically, but Austin did a good job and Rafe Peavey did as well. I'm pleased with those guys, because right now it is set with Austin and then Rafe, but those two are competing against each other so it's exciting to watch them grow and play."
Austin Allen on being named the backup quarterback: "I'm glad he has confidence in me. But everyone's going to keep working, I got to get better and take Brandon Allen's spot and Rafe has to get better to take my spot. Everyone is always trying to get better."
Sebestian Tretola on prepping for Auburn in the hottest week this summer: "Fortunately I'm not 370 pounds anymore, so it's definitely nice going out there slimmer and lighter to practice every day. But we're football players, it's what we do."
