Arkansas Cinema Society offers free filmmaking workshop for teen girls

Starting Tuesday, March 26, the Arkansas Cinema Society will team up with the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas - Girls of Promise Initiative and JM Associates to start the ACS Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Starting Tuesday, March 26, the Arkansas Cinema Society will team up with the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas - Girls of Promise Initiative and JM Associates to start the ACS Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls.

Aspiring filmmakers don’t have to wait until after high school to start building their career. The first lab will be for juniors in high school in central Arkansas, ages 16-18, and will be held at JM Associates in the South Main district in downtown Little Rock at 1200 Scott Street.

More information about the program is available at on their website.

The lab is for high school junior girls who dream of following in the footsteps of Ruth Carter, Kathryn Bigelow, Sally Menke, Reed Morano, and other female directors, cinematographers, editors and screenwriters.

For eight weeks, these young women will learn about all aspects of film production under the guidance of mentors and professional creators in a hands-on environment through all stages of the filmmaking process - from original story idea, to screenplay, production, editing and finishing.

Using facilities and gear provided by sponsor JM Associates, they will complete two short films that will be featured at future ACS events, including Filmland 2019.

The films will focus on female empowerment, particularly in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) disciplines. The teens will be assigned various roles during production, including screenwriting, directing, cinematography, and editing.

No prior filmmaking experience is necessary and the program is free. The space in the lab is limited.

For more information and to apply, you can visit their website. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 15.
