BATESVILLE, Ark. — For Tibetan monks, sand paintings symbolize that everything in our modern world is fleeting.
On Monday, a group of monks arrived at Lyon College in Batesville to create a Mandala sand painting.
For four days, students visited the Holloway Theater and watched as the monks meticulously dropped tiny particles of sand into place.
In a ceremony on Thursday, the monks prayed over the sand and then destroyed their masterpiece. This is because Buddhist believe that nothing is permanent in our material life.
While part of the sand will be returned to the earth, some particles were gifted to the students and faculty at the ceremony.
