The Rep announces spring theatre classes for people of all ages

Arkansas Repertory Theatre schedules four-week classes beginning in April for ages 5+

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Beginning April 1, The Rep will have classes that include training in musical theatre, improvisation, Shakespeare, theatre dance, tap dance, stage combat, and audition prep for students of all ages and abilities.

More than 7,500 Arkansas students benefit each year from the Rep's classes, workshops with guest artists, summer programs, community outreach and the Student Matinee Program.

Available courses include:

"Adult Improv Class: Improvisational State of Mind

Enhance your professional and personal skills through the study of Fundamental Improvisation. Under the philosophy of "Yes! And...", students will learn how to heighten their ability to listen to understand, build relationships through an "attitude of gratitude," and enhance their cognitive skills by building a community of support by playing Improv and Theater games. Students will leave feeling self-confidence in their ability to be adaptable at home, in the workplace, or on stage. No previous experience necessary! Bring water and a notebook if you wish.

Time: Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m.

Dates: April 2, 9, 16, 23

Intro to Stage Combat (9th-12th Grades)

In this class, high school actors will learn the basics of unarmed stage combat. Working in a fun, but safe, environment, students will learn basic punches, grabs, throws, and proper footwork from certified stage combat instructor Kevin Brown.

Time: Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m.

Shaking Up Shakespeare (6th-8th Grades) 

Have no fear, Shakespeare is here! This fun, high-energy course takes a playful, introductory look at the language of the greatest playwright in history and gives young actors the foundational tools needed to decipher, demystify, and perform beginning Shakespeare text. With a focus on meter, voice and speech, and integrating movement with the language - young actors will enjoy approaching the classic literature with a 21st century attitude.

Time: Thursdays from 5:30-7 p.m.

Theatre Dance Classes

Learn jazz and theatre basics in this high-energy dance class focusing on Broadway-style choreography. Beginning with warm ups and across the floor exercises, students will hone their skills through warm-ups and practice picking up choreography in theatre combinations. Learn how to fill your movement with meaning and unleash the fun in expressing yourself through dance! This class is best suited for beginning dancers or actors who move.

Time: Thursdays from 4:30-5:45 p.m.
