Meet the Arkansas grandma who water skis on Beaver Lake every day

Gloria Sommers is an 82-year-old grandma of two who has been water skiing since she was around 17 years old.

ROGERS, Ark. — It's not uncommon to see water skiers this time of year on Beaver Lake. But for one Rogers couple, age isn't stopping them from getting on the water.

82-year-old Gloria Sommers lives on Beaver Lake and goes water skiing every day.

“Since I was 17 or 18, it's my thing," said Gloria. "Some play baseball, some play golf, I like to water ski”

She's lived in the Rocky Branch area for 35 years with her husband, Ron. Married for 60 years, Ron still drives Gloria in their speed boat every morning.

“I didn't really get involved in it until 1962 when I was still in the Air Force and we were in Omaha, Nebraska and she had some friends that she worked with that had a boat and that's just how one thing led to another," said Ron. "I mean she was skiing, and we decided, 'hey we need a boat.'"

Gloria said that she had taught all three of her kids since they were around four years old. She says many in the area see her on the lake and ask for lessons.

“I’ve been out here at the Coppermine Lodge across the lake," said Gloria. "People have seen me and have wanted me to teach their grandchildren or wanted to know me.”

Gloria said she's not afraid to hit the water every day in the summer—and even in the fall if the weather permits. “I mean it can be March or November, if it’s nice out there, I’m gonna go," she said.

Ron said they've never had any issues skiing on the lake. He said the only potential issue they've had is when he'd need a hip replacement, but even then, he'd schedule them in the winter months.

“I mean, why give something up when you're having fun?" asked Gloria. "You're only as old as you think you are.”
