Retired lawyer croons with River City Men's Choir as a passion project

Chuck Goldner, 69, is a retired lawyer who loves to sing. He's part of the River City Men's Choir.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Getting older certainly does not have to mean slowing down.

This week on THV11, we are highlighting five “Super Seniors.:” individuals who are defying aging and staying active in their community, even after retirement.

Chuck Goldner, 69, was a lawyer for many years until he decided to retire. Now he spends his Sunday evenings at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, singing.

He is part of the River City Men’s Chorus, a group of men, of all ages, doing what they love: singing.

“We only have a couple people who are trained musicians, so of the 60 of us, most of us are men who can read music and love to sing,” said Chuck Goldner.

Goldner joined the choir 16 years ago when it first began and has been singing along ever since.

“I thought, well I sang in seventh-grade choir, but since then there was nothing until I sang in a church choir. So I came to that first rehearsal and have been here ever since,” said Goldner.

The River City Men’s Chorus practices every Sunday evening under the direction of artistic director and conductor, David Glaze.

“When these men stay in the chorus for so many years, I think that speaks well of the organization and I think people other men, especially young men, can look at that and say ‘if someone is going to stay in an organization that long they must really enjoy it. There must be something there that keeps them around,’” said conductor, David Glaze.

Goldner said being a part of the chorus gives him something to do with all his free time.

“I initially thought ‘what am I going to do with all this time?’ What I found out was that there really is not that much time. I actually don't know how I did the things I did while I was working,” laughed Goldner.

The River City Men’s Choir is set to perform their spring concert April 7th, 8th and 11th.
