Back to the '80s: Retro party planned in former Downtown Little Rock shopping mall

This weekend will bring a unique opportunity in Downtown Little Rock for people to take a trip back to the '80s.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — This weekend will bring a unique opportunity in Downtown Little Rock for people to take a trip back to the '80s.

The Downtown Little Rock Partnership will host an "'80s Mall Party" on Saturday, July 13. It will take place from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the old Main Street Mall, located at the corner of Capitol Ave. and Main Street.

Gabe Holmstrom, executive director of the Downtown Little Rock Partnership, says the space opened as a shopping mall in the 1980s, but the stores closed down within several years. Now owned by the state of Arkansas, the building houses multiple agencies along with the Downtown Little Rock Partnership offices, and Slick's Sandwich Shop – an original tenant in the mall.

"This is a time capsule from 1984," Holmstrom said. "You have the glass tile that's lit up. You have the black and white ceramic tile around the mall. You have the neon details."

The '80s Mall Party will feature a special appearance by Marty McFly and Doc Brown's DeLorean. Slick's Sandwich Shop – an original mall tenant – will be serving up burgers and fries, and there will be a lip-sync contest. Guests will also have a chance to take in tunes from a DJ and partake in retro arcade games.

Admission is $20 for general admission and $40 for VIP.

"We hope to take the proceeds of this event and do more things out in the public sphere that everyone can enjoy," Holmstrom said.
