Central Arkansas man in hospice care, final wish is to marry first love

One Central Arkansas man's dying wish was to re-marry his first love.

One Central Arkansas man's dying wish was to re-marry his first love.

Thomas James is currently in hospice care, with stage 4 lung cancer and isn't expected to live much longer. Saturday, Dec. 1, he and his high school sweetheart vowed to make the most of his time left.

The Pangburn couple's love story started years ago when Brenda and Thomas James first met in 1978.

"He knew me long before I knew him," Brenda James said.

Thomas said he met Brenda when they were living their 'honky tonk' life.

"Then we got together in '81, in August of 81," Brenda said.

The couple was married for over 30 years and later divorced. They have since rekindled their love for each other and are tying the knot once again.

"It was my ex-husband's final wish to be remarried, and it's been a blessing," she said.

This is his final wish because he has stage 4 lung cancer, and his family isn't sure how many days he has left. Brenda is vowing to make the most of their time together.

"I have cried for about two months," Brenda said.

With the help of a hospice center and volunteers, he got his fairytale wedding.

"His wish was to marry his high school sweetheart, to marry his first love," venue owner Tina Reaper said.

With just a few days’ notice, staff at the Wedding Barn in Pangburn organized their special day.

"They called us on Sunday and we put this wedding together in five days," Reaper said.

Everything at the ceremony was donated.

"From the DJ to the cake to the caterers," Reaper said.

With friends and family by their side, they vowed their love one last time.

"It makes me happy, I am so happy for them," Brenda’s sister Twylia Rolland said. "They have loved each other for a long, long, long time and this is really a dream come true.”

They hope to be by each other's sides until the end.

"We're going to remain that way,” Brenda said.
