Importance of changing your bulbs | Today's Home

Chris H. Olsen tells us how he planted his bulbs and why it is important to change them.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - You know Chris Olsen remembers just a few months ago in the Fall when he planted over six thousand different types of bulbs in his yard.

What he did was mix different varieties together for what he calls a “Bulb Meadow.” The reason he did this was that if you mix Daffodils and Tulips and different color Hyacinths and Grape Hyacinths, Crocuses all these different types of bulbs together they may start to come up at the same time but they will bloom at different times.

So, he’ll have his early bloomers which are starting to give color but later he’ll have a Hyacinths and have Tulips and late-blooming Narcissus and Daffodils. So, basically probably for ten weeks, he will have a beautiful bulb garden blooming.

He did this instead of the pansies that he usually does because he has lots of rabbits and you may have a problem with rabbits and deer. He is just not going to get out here and spray every single week. Bulbs they don’t seem to bother. The only problem he has is sometimes squirrels when he first planted these bulbs dig them out but he watched that pretty closely.

Within just a few weeks he is going to have an array of different color bulbs blooming here and again it will last ten weeks. So, remember next fall you might want to consider not planting so many pansies and more bulbs. Because they are easy and inexpensive.
