Crisis text line offers free, 24/7 service to help people fighting depression

The Arkansas Counseling Association recently posted the crisis text line number on Facebook, generating about 4,000 shares.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - High expectations and loneliness surrounding the holidays can cause a spike in people feeling anxious or depressed. The Arkansas Counseling Association recently posted the crisis text line number on Facebook, generating about 4,000 shares.

Every day, 6,000 to 10,000 people across the country who are feeling down or suicidal talk to a crisis counselor through text messaging. The service is free 24/7 and an option for anyone who needs someone to talk to.

If you're dealing with depression, suicidal thoughts, bullying, isolation or any mental health struggles text "Home" to 741-741 and a crisis counselor will text you back. Alli Clark Howland is one of those 17,400 volunteer crisis counselors.

"I think anyone who feels like they’re in a moment that might be overwhelming for them or they’re stressed or anxious or scared and confused and don’t know who to talk to, it’s for everyone," Howland said.

After applying to volunteer, the crisis text line paid for her 30 hours of online training on listening, problem-solving and crisis management.

“I thought if I have the ability to keep a calm and be an ear for someone, I thought that’s something I’d love to do," Howland said.

She volunteers about four hours a week in split shifts talking to anywhere from 15 to 50 people during a shift with the goal of bringing texters from a hot moment to a cool calm.

"There’s usually more in the colder months and holidays for sure," Howland said.

The text line is geared especially for teens and young adults who would rather text than talk on the phone.

Howland showed us the number of texters at once. Mid-day Monday there were 70-80 texters at once waiting for a counselor to respond. That number of texters is enough to show you're not alone and there's always someone on the other end waiting to listen.

“It’s just knowing maybe you can do just a little bit to help someone else when they need it," Howland said.

The crisis text line is always in need of volunteers. If you need help, text “Home” to 741-741 and you'll hear from someone in about five minutes or less.
