Store makes furniture from recycled trailers, provides veterans support team

On the outside looking in, these employees look like your everyday working man, but there's so much more than meets the eye.

ROGERS, Ark.(KTHV)- One man's trash is another man's treasure, and one business in Northwest Arkansas shows that through their work.

Owner of EcoVet furniture, Mike Hagood, said his workers make furniture from recycled trailers.

"Most people don't know that the wood that comes out of the trailers is oak and maple. It's great wood and it has a lot of history because it's been on the road for 20-25 years," he said.

EcoVet specializes in office furniture but they also do home decor, custom pieces and wood walls.

What the company doesn't use they recycle and sell.

On the outside looking in, these employees look like your everyday working man, but there's so much more than meets the eye.

"We hire a lot of people that have the love and craft for building but we focus on veterans because there's over 600,000 veterans in the United States today that are unemployed," he said.

Hagood said EcoVet is a company, but more importantly, it's a support team.

"Most of these guys struggle so bad from what they've faced out there," he said.

Currently, Hagood has 25 workers and 70 percent of them are vets, vets struggling to fit in.

"They can't go to Walmart and work, it's been hard to keep the business alive but it's starting to pay off," he said.

Workers, Jonathan Moll and Steven McDonald, said transitioning back to reality is a challenge.

"I served in the Marine Corps for six years, I did a couple of tours," Moll said. "Going to war is easy but coming home is incredibly hard."

"I served for the Marine Corps for five years in Communication," McDonald said. "I'm not used to being relaxed so if I stand around too long, it gets to me and stresses me out.

However, it's a challenge they're getting closer to overcoming everyday thanks to EcoVet.

"I love this job because it's rewarding and because it's hard work," McDonald said.

"It's a lot easier to deal with things when you have people around you that are dealing with the same things," Moll said.

"I think they enjoy coming and working here but they don't enjoy it as much as I enjoy having them here," Hagood said.
