Little Rock children plant seeds for future at community garden

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Feed First USA, a local nonprofit in Southwest Little Rock, is working to make sure kids know exactly where the food we eat comes from with a community garden.

To our surprise, many of the kids admitted they like vegetables! Thanks to a little help from the garden, surely.

This is just one of many ways the group is serving children.

"I like the peppers but not tomatoes. Well, I kind of like tomatoes,” said Madison Grobmyer, one of the children attending Feed First USA’s summer program.

Healthy balanced meals are made possible by food that grows from dirt in the ground.

“All we know now is fast food. Kids don't always like to grab vegetables and the good stuff. I think it makes it fun when they can actually take it out the ground and eat it,” Marketing and Summer Camp Director Tasha Shumate said.

She thinks it’s important that children learn the importance of knowing how vegetables are grown naturally.

“We learned that you have to be very careful or you might break or squish them,” Tianna Delneay said, another kid benefiting from Feed First USA’s enrichment initiatives.

This grassroots organization works to impact the lives of children in communities where the need is greatest.

Some children in their summer camp are being introduced to planting for the very first time.

“We partnered with Mr. George here. He was so gracious and donated some things, and built the gate for us. He put it together in less than a week,” said Shumate.

The only community garden right now sits in the Whispering Hills Mobile Home Park, one of the many sites where group meals are provided.

“When we come out here sometimes we have to move around the plants. We pull out the weeds. And sometimes we pick tomatoes and peppers,” Grobmyer said.

Tomatoes, peppers and much more to come soon thanks to donations from a local Home Depot.

“We came out here twice and we enjoy this a lot. It’s pretty awesome. I want to be a Gardener when I grow up,” added Delneay.
