BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Prosecutors in northwestern Arkansas have dismissed an assault charge against former Benton County Sheriff Kelley Cradduck.

The 47-year-old Cradduck was arrested in August for third-degree assault on a family or household member, a misdemeanor.

Cradduck was accused at the time of assaulting a female family member who was later identified as his wife. The woman alleged that Cradduck had pushed her down.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports that prosecutors dismissed the charge on Friday after Cradduck's wife recanted and Cradduck enrolled in counseling to address anger issues. Prosecutors have up to one year to refile the case.

Cradduck was elected sheriff in 2012 but resigned in 2016 after he was charged with tampering with public documents. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to six months of unsupervised probation.
