LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A 4-year-old boy is dead after what police say was an accidental shooting inside an apartment unit in the Westbridge complex off John Barrow Rd in Little Rock.

It happened just after noon, with police and emergency responders rushing to find the boy, with at least one shooting injury to the head. He was taken to a medical facility where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene and spent the afternoon working out details of how the boy got the gun and whether he shot himself or if other people accidentally fired it.

Rico Reed, 27, is being held at the Pulaski County Jail. He's also accused of endangering the welfare of a minor and tampering with evidence.

According to detectives, the boy accidentally shot himself, but after searching his family's apartment, they found evidence had been moved from the scene, and that's when Reed was arrested.

This is the second child 5-years-old or under to die like this in Little Rock in the last eight months, with the last occurring in the Southwest part of town Sept. 22, 2018.

In that case, a 5-year-old died after being shot and killed while home alone with three siblings. That case was deemed accidental and prosecutors never filed any charges.

Then, as now, police continue trying to spread the word about keeping guns safely secured.

“This is one more reason we always preach as police department about gun safety,” said Officer Eric Barnes, spokesperson for the LRPD. “We do not want these incidents to occur to anyone, especially to children.”
