Conway man found dead after kidnapping, murdering of Desha County woman

Texas police reported to Arkansas State Police Lavern Blackmon was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Update: Texas law enforcement notified Arkansas State Police around 6 p.m. July 2 that Lavern Blackmon was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.


Police say 57-year-old Lavern Blackmon of Conway is wanted for the kidnapping and murder of 56-year-old Viola Davis of Desha County.

Police say kidnapped Davis around 5:30 a.m. on June 29 as she left for work in Desha County. Davis' body was discovered on Monday, June 29, along Kirtley Road in Dumas.

Arkansas State Police have obtained a warrant for Blackmon and ask anyone with information to contact their nearest ASP office.

Blackmon may be driving a 2008 Grey Chevrolet Avalanche truck and he may have possibly fled the state.

Blackmon is believed to be in the possession of at least two handguns and may possibly pose a threat to others. He is currently charged in Desha County with Kidnapping and Capital Murder.

If you see him, do not approach him. Contact law enforcement immediately.

Davis’ body is being examined at the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine a manner and cause of death.
