Pine Bluff FD responds to smoke alarm at W.C. 'Dub' Brassell Detention Center

Officials determined there was no fire and the smoke had come from burned plastic.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the Pine Bluff Fire Department responded to a call regarding a  possible fire at the W.C. 'Dub' Brassell Detention Center on July 5 at approximately 9:43 p.m.

The shift supervisor at the detention center received a call from Metropolitan Emergency Communication Association (MECA), stating that someone had reported a fire at the center.

Deputies found smoke in the day-room area of the A Pod.

Detainees were removed from the area while a safety search was conducted. During the search, deputies found ashes in three sinks in the shower area. Officials determined there was no fire and the smoke had come from burned plastic.

There were no injuries and the pod was determined safe to use.

Detainees were searched individually before returning to their cells and contraband was found in the forms of: cellphones, tobacco, cigarettes, a lighter, a screwdriver, and a white substance that was later identified as sugar inside of two clear plastic sandwich bags.
