71-year-old man fatally shot by Arkansas deputy while driving tractor with gun

According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Detective Vector Xiong was involved in a shooting that killed a person on Saturday.

BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — The Benton County Sheriff's Office has confirmed Detective Vector Xiong shot and killed a 71-year-old man on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Decatur.

The shooting took place on Falling Springs Road, the sheriff's office said. Deputy Xiong, who has been with the department since 2015, has been placed on administrative leave.

Arkansas State Police identified the man killed as 71-year-old Nelson Amos. In a news release, state police said a resident had reported hearing gunfire on Amos' property and deputies were dispatched to the area.

"A sheriff’s deputy later encountered Amos on a local road driving a tractor and brandishing a handgun. The sheriff’s deputy fired his rifle striking Amos," ASP said.

Amos was later pronounced dead at the scene.

"Special agents of the state police Criminal Investigation Division are preparing an investigative file to the submitted to the Benton County prosecuting attorney who will determine whether the use of deadly force by the sheriff’s deputy was consistent with Arkansas laws," the statement says. 

Amos' body has been transported to the state crime lab.
