Teacher makes time every week for students to count their blessings

Every Thursday, the students have a moment to brainstorm, write their thoughts on a piece of paper, and tack it onto the classroom's "I'm Grateful" board.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Anthony School’s third grade teacher Bri Leland is not only teaching her kids about the importance of reading, but having them take the time and reflect.

Every Thursday, the kids in Leland’s class take time to recognize the things they are thankful for.

"It's so cool to see what they come up with and what their little minds are grateful for that you never considered,” said Leland.

"I'm grateful for my glasses. I’m thankful that I can see out of them,” said third-grader Claire Steliga.

"I’m thankful for my family, life, and camping,” said third-grader Jack Shy.

They have a moment to brainstorm, write their thoughts on a piece of paper, and tack it onto the classroom's "I'm Grateful" board.

It’s an initiative Leland started at the beginning of the school year to help her kids understand, although they live in a fast culture, there's always enough time to count your blessings.

"They love it," said Leland. “They know this is what we came up with. This is about who we are as individuals, not just about a letter grade or a story we read."

For Claire, having the board to remind her of what she's thankful for has been a lesson in disguise.

"I may take it for granted, that's why I like doing it,” said Claire. "Think about everyone in our whole world. That's a lot. What if they say I’m grateful for something? Just think about how many things people could be grateful for."

Mrs. Leland's class proves you are never too young to share wise words.
Their goal is to fill the entire Grateful Board by the end of the school year.
