Nearly 2,000 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Arkansas

As of Sunday, May 3, the Arkansas Department of Health has confirmed a total of 3,431 positive cases.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — As of Sunday, May 3, the Arkansas Department of Health has confirmed a total of 3,431 positive cases.

On Wednesday, there were 2,520 COVID-19 tests were performed in Arkansas, with a 1.5% positivity rate. This is the highest number of tests run in one day in the state since March 11.

On Friday, Gov.Hutchinson announced a plan to reopen hair salons and barbershops. We learned on Thursday that gyms will be able to open up starting on Monday, May 4, followed by restaurants the following Monday, May 11.

Sunday, May 3

3:00 p.m.

There are now a total of 3,431 positive cases in Arkansas and three new deaths due to COVID-19 since yesterday.

According to the Arkansas Department of Corrections, three prison inmates died today— two were being treated for COVID-19 symptoms.

The third death took place within the Cummins Unit infirmary after he "collapsed in front of correctional officers," the ADC said in a statement. They say they don't believe the death to be COVID-19 related, but an autopsy will be performed to confirm the manner of death.

It is unclear whether the 2 confirmed COVID-19 inmate deaths are counted in the three death increase since yesterday.

Saturday, May 2

1:30 p.m.

There are now a total of 3,372 positive cases in Arkansas and nine new deaths due to COVID-19.

That brings the total number of deaths to 73. Two of the deaths are from the Cummins Unit prison.

  • 1,312 active cases
  • 100 hospitalizations
  • 73 deaths
  • 1,987 recoveries

10:00 a.m.

Friday, May 1

7:20 p.m.

The Arkansas Department of Health updated its site to show 3,310 positive cases, an 11 case decrease from the earlier report during the press conference.

There are now 1,985 recoveries in the state.

1:40 p.m.

Arkansas Health Secretary Dr. Nate Smith breaks down the 3,321 COVID-19 positive cases:

  • 1,284 active cases
  • 95 hospitalizations
  • 23 on ventilators 
  • 1,973 recoveries 
  • 64 deaths
  • 229 nursing home residents
    • 142 staff 

Gov.Hutchinson announced an additional $85 million in grant money for the Arkansas Ready for Business program because of an overwhelming number of applicants.

In a press conference, Gov. Hutchinson confirmed a total of 3,321 positive cases, which is a 66 case increase from yesterday. He also announced 3 new COVID-19 deaths, which brings the total to 63.

Gov. Hutchinson announced Friday during a press conference will be open for business on Wednesday, May 6 with restrictions.
