Roughly 14 pounds of medical marijuana sold in Arkansas since legalization

Medical marijuana has been on the market for just a few days in Arkansas and already hundreds have traveled to Hot Springs to get their hands on it.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Medical marijuana has been on the market for just a few days in Arkansas and already hundreds have traveled to Hot Springs to get their hands on it.

Justin Brandon Collins said he has waited his entire life to get his hands on medical marijuana in Arkansas.

"I've had ulcerative colitis since I was 13, and I've had two blood transfusions and just about a year and a half ago I was 156 pounds, and if it weren't for that I don't think I would be alive,” Collins said.

Collins is one of the dozens who waited over 5 hours in line Monday at Green Springs Medical. Since opening its doors Sunday, the Medical Marijuana Commission said the dispensary sold just under three pounds of marijuana by Monday afternoon.

"For something natural, and for people to get that legally, its history,” Collins said.

Doctors Order’s, the dispensary that opened last Friday in Hot Springs, sold just under 11 pounds of marijuana by 1 p.m. Monday.

"It’s been unbelievable. The response of people coming about has totally taken me by surprise,” Green Springs Medical co-owner Bruce Simpson said.

Simpson said he has not had any problems with customers since opening.

"Everyone's been patient to take their turn. We thought they would be camping out to tell you the truth. We likened it to a Star Wars, you know people waiting in line for that,” Simpson said.

Simpson said despite the long lines, there is still plenty left to sell.

"The quality is the best that's available and it is what the people of Arkansas have been waiting on, its time,” Simpson said.

Each patient is allowed to purchase up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana every 14 days and each dispensary must have "seed to sale" software that reports each sale to the state.

Scott Hardin with the Medical Marijuana Commission says so far, it has been a great first few days for Arkansas' medical marijuana industry.
