Black woman says son racially profiled while learning to drive in Little Rock

15-year-old Chase Dunn-Buffington and his mother were driving in a Chenal-area neighborhood in Little Rock when she said a White woman began following their car.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Chase Dunn-Buffington, a 15-year-old Joe T. Robinson student, and his mother Sharon were driving in a Chenal-area neighborhood in Little Rock when a White woman began following them in a car and later calling the police, Sharon said in a Facebook live video shortly after the incident.

Sharon Dunn-Buffington went on to say last Saturday, July 18, Chase needed practice behind the wheel after receiving a learner's permit.

They noticed a White female following behind them while he drove with his mother in the passenger seat through the neighborhood. Buffington explained in the video how her son, who had never gotten in trouble before, became nervous.

Shortly after, a Little Rock police officer pulled them over and told him they'd received calls of concern from neighbors.

Buffington explained that her son was a brand new driver and said the officer—who was White—could not have been nicer and more encouraging.

Still, she shared her experience because she and her son were shaken from the racial profiling that took place from another driver.

"All he was wanting to do was to get some drive time experience on the road and his first experience was that some White people called the police on us," Buffington said in the video.

"What happened to having the freedom of going wherever I want to go as long as you're not bothering anybody? I'm more hurt than he is."

Her post has now been viewed nearly 7,000 times and she's received an outpouring of support, even from the neighborhood where the incident happened.

She and her son Chase said they'd like to find out the name of the Little Rock police officer so they can thank him.
