Road closed in Sebastian County due to large mudslide

The mudslide is south of what is commonly known as Lovers Leap all the way to Forest Tower Way.

SEBASTIAN COUNTY, Ark. — County Road Sugar Loaf Mountain Way in Sebastian County is closed due to a large mudslide.

The Sebastian County Road director says recent heavy rains have caused the mudslide. The mudslide is south of what is commonly known as Lovers Leap all the way to Forest Tower Way.

Just this past fall the department repaired the road after a minor slide in the past 15 years.

“We’ve had a couple of small slippages and we’ve been able to take a road grader back in there and fix it up and make it passable. It’s been doing it for probably 15 years," said Jim Carter with Sebastian County Roads.

The county says the next steps are not up to them but to the earth because the county can't make a move until the landslide comes to a halt.

This is an ongoing situation as ground sliding is still happening. The road is currently barricaded and closed until further notice.

“Right now we’ve blocked the road off so the public can’t get down there. I’m not sure what we’ll do as a county. There’s no homes up there, no one is trapped you can get in from either side," Carter said.

Carter also says to stay behind the barricades and that the County Sheriff is writing tickets for anyone who crosses that area as it is a safety issue.
