'Get Wealth' event connects job seekers with employers

Over 2,000 people went to the Power to Get Wealth job fair Sunday in Little Rock.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Little Rock’s Saint Mark Baptist Church is helping people find financial security.

Over 2,000 people went to the Power to Get Wealth job fair Sunday.

Potential employees went to a job readiness training Saturday, now they’re hoping their phones will be ringing with job opportunities.

“It just gives everyone the opportunity to be able to see and see what’s out there and what they may not see online,” job seeker Deiana Carter said.

Over 50 employers showed up in search of opportunities.

“I’ve been to many job fairs so I’m hoping today to actually, possibly, potentially gain employment again and be able to join the workforce,” job seeker Janiece Williams said.

Every January the church holds the event hoping to help people start the year on the right foot.

“When you’re working, you can thrive, you can survive, you are able to take care of your family, your responsibilities,” spokesperson Mabeline Hansberry said.

Some of the companies do on the spot interviews, which some candidates find easier.

“Now everything is just through technology and everyone is just not technology savvy so it was really nice that they could come face-to-face and be personable and meet someone from human resources for the jobs they’re applying for,” Williams said.

“We offer job readiness classes where we review resumes, we help you with your resumes, hiring tips, interview tips,” Hansberry said.

Among the employers were colleges, banks, and even a barbershop.

“I think we got two people that came out to the job fair last year and that worked out pretty well and we still have openings, so we were trying to get some more people to come through,” Skillz Barber Shop Owner Gary Ellison said.

They do plan to have the event again next year.
