Maumelle Animal Services asking people to adopt dogs after numbers double

Pets need your help at Maumelle Animal Services after large number of animals were surrendered this weekend, putting the shelter over capacity.

The shelter is relatively small and can usually only hold 18 dogs. Lewis says Maumelle Animal Services does not euthanize to make space. But it has been forced to double-up, putting two dogs in every kennel, which employees say is very stressful for the animals.

Jean Lewis, President of Maumelle Friends of the Animals, said the shelter needs people to step up and adopt, but she also has a word of advice for anyone considering getting a pet: do not take the responsibility lightly.

"Please, when you're thinking about getting a puppy as a gift, whether its Christmas or a Birthday or anything else, remember that puppy is going to grow up and its going to need a lot more care than petting it and playing with it," Lewis said.

"When you make a commitment to an animal, make that commitment. Don't give up on it."
