Cabot Southside Elementary K Kids count and collect 1,800 cans and boxes to "Feed the Vets"

CABOT, Ark. (KTHV) - Vets from the American Legion entered the room, where 4th graders had gathered. Something wonderful was about to happen at Southside Elementary in Cabot.

First off, a special surprise to Joyce Short of Feed the Vets. A $279 donation from the vets themselves, who had spent a day collecting in front of the Cabot Kroger.

Followed by the big veteran's surprise, the Southside Elementary kids had something in return.

The principal asked if the boys and girls would line up, and the food brigade began with kids carrying the food they'd collected for Feed the Vets out to the trucks.

They're known as the "K Kids", a special group devoted to service, and they responded to a last minute call to help feed veterans families before Thanksgiving. They only had a week to prepare.

"Our kids worked so hard," said Lindsey Duncan. "They counted, and they collected, and they advertised and organized."

There were a total of 1,800 cans and boxes of food the K kids responded with.

"People in need -- need food, so I thought I could help feed them," K Kid Maddie said.

The K Kids collected any way they could.

"My mom just went and bought it," Brennen Terrel said.

These kids prove again how all of us respond to vets in need. There's a reason.

"Pride," said veteran Doc Shets. "I think it's pride in the veterans that have served this country honorably, and have put it all on the line."

Pride is what these kids realized first hand when meeting the vets up close.

"Was it hard going through the war," Maddie asked Bill, a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. "Yes it was honey," Bill said. "You think about it. I left my family home and I'm over there not knowing what's gonna happen the next day."
