Cabot schools offer Safe Talk to promote suicide prevention awareness

They hope that these events will help promote suicide awareness.

CABOT, Ark. (KTHV) -- Suicide numbers are on the rise, mainly among teens and young adults.

Cabot schools are offering two different Teen Safe Talks in November. They hope that these events will help promote suicide awareness. Both Safe Talks will aim to help people recognize the signs that at risk people give.

Cabot school employees that will be at this event have attended training to further their education to know how to help people suffering from thoughts of suicide and depression. The training also promoted providing these students with a message of hope.

"We can prevent tragedies if we increase awareness," said Nicole True with Cabot schools.

Also helping out with this event is Sarah Teeter Johnson, who started Alex's Army. Alex's Army was started after Johnson's son, Alex, took his life in December of 2015.

"There is a need in the community for people to have hope. Someone trained to know what thoughts of suicide and depression bring," she said.

She also attended the same training that the Cabot employees did.

"If we gather knowledge about this topic we can prevent others from taking their lives or getting into this deep, dark place," Johnson said. "We need to talk about it year round, especially around holidays.

The Teen Safe Talks will be on November 6 and 13. More information such as time and location will be released closer to the event. The event is free and open to the public.
