Ellen Smith first-graders learn their letters in the most creative ways

They're strong believers in using the arts to augment what's learned in the classroom, covering all eight styles of learning.

CONWAY, Ark. — The Reading Roadtrip traveled to Conway this time to help explore the Ellen Smith way.

Ellen Smith Elementary has the title, "Blue Ribbon School," on its resume.

They're strong believers in using the arts to augment what's learned in the classroom, covering all eight styles of learning.

Get this. To help first-graders, who can be seen reacting to the news they'd be on the news, learn their letters, the teachers at Ellen Smith have been known to have kids write letters in the dirt, finger paints, and even making letters with shaving cream.

The symbols and sounds are so important to the science of reading.

As for the Reading Roadtrip, it's all about the drama.

Ellen Smith Elementary even has a mini-library near its front door. Books to go. I love it.
